Dear Chair of the Meetings Committee,

I am very grateful to the Royal Meteorological Society and the Legacies fund which allowed me to attend the Royal Meteorological Society’s  Student Conference 2015 at the University of Birmingham. I was privileged to be selected as part of the conference organising committee which allowed me to see the conference evolve from the first meeting when we decided on the venue and keynote theme, all the way through to the conference itself involving over 60 delegates and nine invited speakers. Everyone was inspired by the speakers who presented on a variety of weather, climate and career topics including Weather, Art and Music (WAM). The standard of delegate posters and presentations was extremely high with a large variety of subject matters on meteorology and climate.

As part of the committee during the conference I was responsible for chairing two sessions: the first on Oceanography and the second on Urban Meteorology, selecting winning posters, presentations and photos and the ice breaker activities. I also presented my own work entitled 'A Vehicle OverTurning Model: Forecasting risk of disruption on the UK road network during winter storms' in the Weather Impacts session. While nerve-racking it was a very good experience and I received insightful questions regarding my work and how to progress it in the future as well as positive feedback about the clarity of my communication and the presentation itself. I also won the delegate photographic competition prize for my photo 'Sunset over the Grand Canyon' which was a nice surprise.

I really enjoyed the conference and learnt a lot from the invited speakers and the delegate presentations including new innovate areas of meteorology and climate. The RMetS Student Conference is a brilliant place to present work in a friendly environment to others in the field. The networking opportunities were great and I got to talk to many people about their work and interests, I'm sure I'll run into many of them at other conferences and meetings in the future. Overall the conference was an extremely value experience and being on the committee made it even more special to see all the hard work pay off and everyone have a good time.

Kind Regards

Rebecca Hemingway
